Prints for Progress: Using Printmaking to Create Public Awareness
Project Description: Prints for Progress is a printmaking project that aims to create public awareness about critical issues affecting our communities in Stanislaus county. The project will use both relief-printing and screen-printing techniques to create impactful images and messages that convey public health awareness related to COVID-19, water and energy conservation, climate change, emergency preparedness, civic engagement and social justice. The project will organize free printmaking sessions in communities that fall in the bottom quartile of the low health place index to increase accessibility and promote community building. The prints created in the sessions will be displayed for free in public space to reach a wider audience and promote discussion and action towards creating positive change.
Objectives:
To Create visually appealing and informative printmaking designs that raise awareness about public health, climate change, civic engagement and social justice issues.
To engage the community in the printmaking process and increase their accessibility to the arts.
To display the prints in public spaces to reach a wider audience and promote further discussion, participation and action towards creating positive change and fostering community building.

The project will organize printmaking sessions in communities with a low healthy index zone and distribute the prints in public spaces. The project’s objectives are to engage the community, increase accessibility to the arts, promote positive change and foster community building.
Relief-Printing Session Details: Come learn the basic steps of relief-printing by hand! We’ll begin with a brief introduction on block-printing including tools and examples. Using Modesto icons - Arch, Ash Tree, Justice Statue and Seal - as muses you’ll express how you imagine or reimagine Modesto, Ca. As an apprenticeship, You’ll learn how to carve a linoleum block and how to print it by hand. In this session you’ll be drawing, carving and then printing your own art onto paper. You’ll leave with multiples of your hand-printed art and your carved block.
Screen-Printing Session Details: Come learn the basic steps of screen-printing by hand! We’ll begin with a brief introduction on screen-printing including tools and examples. Using Modesto icons - Arch, Ash Tree, Justice Statue and Seal - as muses you’ll express how you imagine or reimagine Modesto, Ca. As an apprenticeship, You’ll learn how to make a stencil and how to print it by hand. In this session you’ll be drawing, painting and then printing your own art onto paper. You’ll leave with multiples of your hand-printed art.
